Elysian Park Ward

1956 Elysian Park Ward

Audrey Kroksh with red hair and white beaded necklace. Gerry Kroksh in front of her. Harry Bitler in brown, center back and his wife Agnes in front of him.

I would guess Elysian Park. No idea on activity. Norm and Frankie Roberts (right of Harry and Aggie) Think that's Bro. St. John on couch. (in front) can't remember 1St name. That looks like Vera next to him but can't remember her last name at that time. Years later she married Ken Kleven. Vera might have been single. Few others look familiar but I was 5, remember faces not names. Jill

Just realized next to Vera are the Ardemas. and I know I'm misspelling his name. He was Bishop when I was a child but not sure of time frame.  He was LAPD officer, his son was Drummond.

It is a house but do not know whos I think St Johns house his name is Sylvania st john just like the light bulb next is vera Hathway the one Ken Kleven married was Allards oldest daughter lorraine allard was her name the youngest is candy Allard ,,,,,,,,,,,, Aardema was bishop of Elysian Park ward 2 times the first time he asked to be released because of his work that was 1050's right before James Allard, from Gerry

Anne and Bert Aardema, on the right table at the end. Based on the photo I am guessing the picture was taken in the 60s

Here is one of a Church Dance at the Elysian Park Ward building. The windows are open, so it was before the bars were placed on the windows.

Thought you might like to add to your notes about the temple dedication.

My mom was also in attendance for the dedication. She was 9 years old at the time. Sister McKay later commented on how unusual it was to have a child attend the dedication. She was allowed to attend because of my Grandpa Bert.

She bore many testimonies about that event and how it stuck with her all her years.

Note: The Los Angeles Temple’s cornerstone was laid on 11 December 1953. A party of sixty-seven, including more than twenty General Authorities, arrived from Salt Lake City by train. They were met at the downtown depot by local Saints in sixteen cars and were taken directly to the temple site about twelve miles away, escorted by two motorcycle policemen, one of them Albert J. Aardema, bishop of the nearby Elysian Park Ward.

Note:  Hello Kent,

Jiminy Cricket:

Dale Murphy used to attend the Elysian Park Ward...

(in my stake at the time) when he was in town in Los Angeles. It was amazing how many visits from the stake presidency that ward got during baseball season when the Braves were in town.

Beitler

Growing up our family went on vacations with the Beitlers because Agnes and Harry were in the Elysian Park ward with my aunt and uncle Audrey and Glen.  On many outings I enjoyed playing with Terry and Denny so when they both moved into our ward in Saugus in the 1980's, I was thrilled.  They both worked  as surveyors and later Terry moved to Bishop where he was a scoutmaster and measured the snowfall for the DWP.  He loved the job.  Our family spent a lot of time camping with the Beitler's.  But it was Terry who was warm and friendly on the camping trips and I know we all enjoyed his company.  Sometimes we slept on his floor before we headed to the High Sierras and one time we played on his trampoline and splashed about in the creek behind his home. He had a weakness for junk food and often brought  bags of candy on our camping trips which he shared with everyone.  I lost track of Terry until two days ago.  I have been thinking about him ever since.  Enclosed is a picture of Terry and Ashley, 1989. Terry Gordon Beitler

April 3, 2012

Beitler. Terry Gordon
1947-2012
Terry Gordon Beitler returned home to his Heavenly Father on March 23, 2012, at his home in Toquerville, Utah. Terry developed a very aggressive, non-curable cancer and passed quickly and peacefully at home with his family gathered around.

Terry was born to Henry and Agnes Beitler on April 27, 1947 in Los Angeles. He went to school at Ivanhoe Elementary, King Jr. High, and John Marshall High, where he excelled in many different sports. He was still playing basketball three days a week at the time of his illness.

After returning from a mission for his church to the Southern States of Georgia, Alabama and North Carolina, Terry met his little sister’s best friend, Jill Brock, and decided she was “the one for him.” They were married in the Los Angeles Temple on June 26, 1970. Terry and Jill have four children who are the love of their lives.

After some college and a mission for his church, Terry went to work for the City of Los Angeles as a surveyor for 15 years before transferring to the Department of Water and Power where he became a hydrographer living in Bishop. That was his dream job; living and working in the Sierra; hiking or snow shoeing into the backcountry in winter to measure the snow depth, calculating water run-off for the City of Los Angeles. Another 15 years working in the Bishop, found the kids all grown and time for another job change. Terry and Jill moved to Arroyo Grande, on the Central Coast, and he began working for California Department of Transportation as a Surveyor again. After another seven years surveying it was time to retire and play with grandkids. This brought a move to St. George, Utah where three of his children and all of his grandkids lived at that time.

As a lifetime member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Terry’s church service was mostly working with the young men’s program and as a scout leader. He loved the youth; he had a special talent of understanding the problems of growing teenagers and reached out to help lift them over the rough patches in life. He always provided unconditional love, quiet strength, and a good example of how to live life to the fullest with honor. He received his “40 years of Scouting” pin in January of 2012. His idea of a great vacation was a 50 mile hike through the Sierra.

Terry always loved to sing and over the years he participated in ward choirs wherever he lived. After moving to St. George, Terry had to opportunity to join the Southern Utah Heritage Choir. He loved being a member of the choir, participating in many concerts and events that the choir supported. One of the highlights was traveling with the choir to sing in China. Singing was a gift; Terry shared his testimony through his love of music.

Terry is survived by his spouse of 41 years, Greta “Jill” Beitler of Toquerville, Utah; his children, Jennifer Beitler (Custis Smith) of Venice Beach, Jeremy Beitler (Kirsten) of Washington, Utah, Jessica Stevens (Alan) of St. George, Utah and Zackery Beitler (Kami) of Tooele, Utah; 10 grandchildren; brother, Dennis Beitler of Salt Lake City, Utah; and sisters, Dina Nevis of Garden Grove, Anita Suzanne Fulton of Santa Cruz and Melanie Pabst of Ventura.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Harry Beitler and Agnes Pratt Beitler; brother, Roger Beitler; and his sister-in-law, Pamela Beitler.

Funeral services will be on Saturday, March 31 at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Toquerville building. Viewing will be between noon and 1 p.m. immediately followed by services in honor of Terry at 1 p.m. Internment will take place in the Toquerville Cemetery following the service.

Arrangements are made under the direction of Heideman Hughes Mortuary, 1081 East 700 S. St. George, Utah, (435) 674-5000.

Thank You.

To all those people that have touched our lives and the lives of our children over the years. We do not know where many of you are, where you have moved to, or how to contact you, but perhaps someone who does will pass along the word of our gratitude. You have made a difference in our lives and been a blessing in the lives of our seven children. Perhaps you do not know what kindness you did or said, because mostly they were small acts, but nonetheless, we noticed, and remember them, and they were more meaningful than we can express. We learned goodness from you. We are what you have helped us to become. To our family you have been kind, generous, true and loyal friends, to whom we owe a debt of gratitude that we could never repay.

A special gratitude to my father: Daniel Wesley Brock (1908-1985), one like Pres. Tanner–unquestioned integrity by all who knew him, full of kindness, wise judgment yet slow to judge (which seem to go together), always a listening ear, faithful, who knew God through his extremities, who lived life-in-danger for 25 years serving his country without us knowing it, and though 4 Eagle Scouts could never fly the American Flag in front of our home, it was one of his last gifts to us.
Three men, all Daniel Wesley Brock, carry the name of this ordinary, unknown man.
May God Bless You, each and every one. Your old friends,
Hank; Julie Brock

heart

Pamela Sue Pederson Beitler, age 63, passed away suddenly on Friday July 29, 2011 at her home in Cottonwood Heights, from a pulmonary embolism.

Pamela was born June 23, 1948 in Des Moines, Iowa to her Mother Darlene G. Cadwell and Father Glen Pederson. Her young life was spent in Iowa until she and her Mother moved to Los Angeles, California.

Pam attended and graduated from Hoover High School in Glendale, where she met her future and surviving husband Dennis Anthony Beitler. The couple married in 1967. To this marriage was born three children, all whom survive their mother: Shelley Jo Beitler (James Graef), Brett Allen Beitler, and Holly Denise Kastner (Haven Kastner). Surviving: sister Linda Carr. Also surviving are four grandchildren: Colton, Ashlynn, Bradley and Brenden Beitler.

As an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Pam and her husband Denny were waiting for their call to serve a Mormon mission. Pam's special passions were the Young Women, and Family History. She recently served in the Relief Society Presidency where she was a great service to so many. She was considered a dynamic and inspirational leader.

She began her career as a dental hygienist and later worked 10 years for Continental Airlines where she retired in 2010.

Pamela's greatest passion was her family. She enjoyed attending and officiating in the 75th Year Family Reunion in Iowa. She also loved scrapbooking. Living the words spoken of Pam's beloved grandmother Margaret Cadwell Schultze, "She spent her life in the service of others and heaven welcomes her with open arms."

Kroksh, Audrey and Glen

Audrey and Glen were long time members of the Elysian Park ward.  They joined the ward in the 1940's and Audrey lived there until 1990 and Glen until his death in 1972.

Harry Robertson: I was sustained as Chairman of the Genealogical Society in the Adams Ward the 27th of Jan., 1931 and set apart by A. Merlin Steed, the Los Angeles Stake Representative, and labored in that capacity till 1933 when I resigned. I was called soon after that to act as home teaching leader, then was chosen to be the counselor to Dr. R. J. Pace, and labored with him till we moved out of the ward. We moved in the Elysian Park Ward in 1937. I was chosen to act as Rep. of Genealogical Society and I am still working in this capacity and like the work very much. Some times I get discouraged and feel like quilting, but I know this is the Lords work and I should do all I can.

Dear Glendale friends,

I was informed by 2 Glendale friends of the passing of Carrie Corrigan. Carrie passed away July 27, 2020, after a brave fight with cancer. She was a kind woman who was loved by all who knew her. The family will hold a private graveside service to honor and remember their beloved wife, mother and grandmother. Carrie Corrigan was a longtime member of the Elysian Park ward. And when the wards combined she became a member of the Glendale 2nd Ward. She is survived by her husband David Corrigan and her 4 sons, and their families.
