Amelia Lacey Slade (Dean) 1827 - 1923

WOMAN PIONEER NONOGENARIAN DEAD

In the death of Mrs. Amelia Slade Dean, immigrant from England and a resident of Utah for fifty-seven years, another name yesterday was taken from the rapidly thinning list of early settlers in the intermountain region.

Mrs. Dean was born at Crewkerne, Sommersetshire, England, October 5, 1827. At the age of 24 years she married William Slade and emigrated to America, going to Philadelphia, where she resided during the civil war. Since coming to America, Mrs. Dean had desired to move to Utah and in 1865, with her family of six children, she started across the plains, her husband having died a year previously. After eight months of tedious travel she reached Salt Lake. During the trip from Philadelphia to Salt Lake, two of Mrs. Dean's sons died. She moved to Morgan and a few months later married Joseph Dean, who died twenty-eight years ago.

Mrs. Dean is survived by five daughters: Mrs. Rhoda Goodrich of Roosevelt; Mrs. Margaret Dixon [Martha Dickson] of Morgan; Mrs. Amelia Bennion; Mrs. D. H. Christensen and Mrs. W. R. Calderwood and by thirty-four grandchildren, seventy-one great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Suday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home of Mrs. W. R. Calderwood, 321 North Main Street. Interment will be in the city cemetery.
