Margaret Rosella Ferrin (Larkin) 1889 - 1967

Margaret Rosella is the granddaughter of Elizabeth Sutter and Jacob Bachman,  Her mother is Rosilla Bachman (Ferrin), the seventh child of Jacob Bachman and her father is Moroni Daniel Ferrin.  She was born 3 Feb 1889.  Thirty one days after Margaret was born, her mother  Rosilla dies from complications of childbirth on March 6, 1889. At the time Moroni is the secretary to the Polysophical Society of the Weber State Academy and teaches there.

So, her mother is Rosilla, she is Margaret Rosella and she has a daughter named Rosella Ann.  The question is this.  After Rosella's mother Rosilla Bachman died, who raised her?

After the death of his first wife Moroni considers what to do.  Does he keep her in his home with no mother or does he send her off to live with relatives?  Moroni won't remarry for another 6 years.  The decision is made.

According to family members Moroni's mother, Martha Ann Bronson (Ferrin) and grandfather, Josiah Ferrin take her into their home in 1889.  Martha is 55 and keeps house.  Josiah is 55 and a contractor for the railroad and Bishop of the Eden Ward.  The 1900 and 1910 censuses confirm that Rosella is still living with them.  So the grandparents raise little Rosella. Her first seven years are in Eden, Utah.  In 1896 her grandfather is released as bishop and they move to 885 26th Street in Ogden. (see his obit)

She is baptized in Ogden, October 10, 1897 at age 8.

On June 19,1904 at 5:40 am Josiah dies from chronic nephritis leaving Rosella and Martha Ann to fend for themselves.  Rosella is 15.  Now she is separated from her father and her mother and grandfather are dead.

Two years later, in 1906 Rosella graduates from the Weber State Academy in home economics.

On December 9, 1914 Rosella Ferrin (age 25) marries into the family that owns the mortuary in Ogden. They are sealed in the SLC Temple. Her husband is Elijah Allen "Lige" Larkin  (1876 - 1962).

Rosella and Elijah have the following children:

  1. 1916-1996
    KWCZ-9JL
  2. 1917-1986
    KWCH-GV1

  5. 1928-2011

Rosella is a member of the 12th Ward in Ogden.  She is a Sunday School teacher, member of the Ogden Stake Primary board and Relief Society Board.  She teaches in the YWMIA in the 12th Ward and is a former class leader, counselor and plresident of the Relief Society.  She is member of the Mount Ogden Stake Relief Society Board.

She is active in the Daughters of Utah Pioneers and is a charter member of Camp Y.  She had been a board member and president of the Weber County Daughters of Utah Pioneers and vice president of the Central Company of Salt Lake City.

She is a charter member of the Children's Hour Club and has been a member of the Ogden Drama Club since 1916.  She is a member of the Child Culture Club and Acacia Club.  Formerly active in the Utah Writers Guild, she is a member of the Blue Quill club and Utah State Poetry Society.

In 1939 she is appointed by Gov. Herbert B. Maw as a member of the Utah Centennial Commission for the state celebration in 1947.

They lived in a craftsman home at 2545 Eccles, Ogden.  The Elijah Larkin home combines three different styles, Neo-Classical Revival, Southern Colonial, and Prairie Style.  The home is a landmark. Interestingly, her grandmother Anna Hegetschweiler knew the Eccles family in Eden for which the street she now lived on in Ogden was named.

Elijah dies on August 9, 1962.

Five years later, Rosella dies after a three day illness of a cerebral hemorrhage the 10 of November 1967, leaving behind a large and growing family.

From 1896 on Rosella lived in this home in Ogden:

The following letter was sent to her son George after her death:

Dear George, We note with sadness the passing of your mother, who in addition to her many qualifications was a great friend of the Institution and the alumni it represents. Both your father and your mother have represented a significant chapter in the history and affairs of this institution and were honored as having played a prominent part of the history of Weber State College. We hope you derive some consolation in the fact that a good life, well lived, as in the case of your parents, will bear fruit for generations to come.

While such sympathies are inadequate in the moment of loss, please accept the sincere sympathy of a grateful College and its Alumni Association. Very truly yours, (signed) Dean W. Hurst Executive Director Associated Alumni of Weber State College
