James Crichton 1792 - 1890

James Crichton b April 2, 1792, to William Crichton and Christen Peddie, was from Horsemiln Farm, Dunbarney, Perth, Perthshire, Scotland. It is a little community 10 miles south of Perth.  In censuses he lists his birthplace as Perth.

He made his way to the Logierait area and married Jean Stewart 11 November 1836. Jean was born in 1808 and he was born in 1792 or 16 years apart.  Three years after they are married James is a forester in Kinclaven.  A forester is employed to guard the forest and its game against poachers. In other words he was a poaching cop or gamekeeper. He forested in Kinclaven for at least 42 years.

James and Jean had seven children: (two children married and had families)

1.  Margaret 1839 - died January 1904 at 65 years old. unmarried (Kinclaven tombstone)
2.  James Crichton 1840 (tea merchant) (lived on Govan Street, Glasgow, Lanark)- married Eliza Milne Mitchell children: James b 1876, Marguerita b 1878, Jeanette Stuart b 1879 and Mabel Elizabeth b 1881, died 1923 (death certificate listed below)
3.  Jane Crichton 1842 died March 25, 1933 at 90 years old. unmarried
4.  Elizabeth Crichton 1845 - married Robert Carmichael when he was 39
5.  William Crichton 1847 - died November 17, 1926 at 79 years old. unmarried (death certificate listed below)
6.  Christina Crichton 1840 - died March 8, 1860 at 10 years old. unmarried (see headstone in Kinclaven church cemetery)
7.  John Crichton July 9, 1852 - died April 14, 1874 at 21 years old. unmarried (date from headstone, death cert not on Scotland's People) (Kinclaven church cemetery)

James was a forester in Kinclaven for at least 42 years.  The Crichton’s lived long lives.  James  lived to be 98,  William, his son, a retired tea merchant, lived to be 78, James Jr, a tea dealer, 83 and his is daughter Jane lived to be 90.  Their daughter Elizabeth married Robert Carmichael, farmer.  Robert lived to be 92 and died in 1925 from old age.  Elizabeth lived until 1930.  She was 85.  James Sr's wife Jean died at 86 years old, a year after James, from bronchitis.  Try and match those numbers!

1890 James Crichton, forester, died, age 98 years, at Cowdens Cottage, Maderty, Perth.  Married to Jane Stewart.  Son of James Crichton,* profession unknown (dec) and Christen Crichton MS Peddie (dec).  Informant: Robert Carmichael, son-in-law

Note: The reason James and Jane died in Madderty, after living most of their lives in Kinclaven, is because they wanted to be near their daughter Elizabeth and husband Robert Carmichael and their grandchildren who lived in the area.

Forrester:    Employed to guard the forest and its game against poachers and trespassers.

Note: The only parish record regarding the Crichton Family is the marriage of Jean Stewart b. 1809 and James Crighton or Crichton. Certainly there was family history mentioning a sister left behind in Scotland named Jean who married James Crichton.   At  John Stewart’s funeral in 1905 there was a Mr Crichton Stewart in attendance which verifies the connection with Jean Stewart.  SR

John Stewart's oldest son named his son James Crichton:
1.  James born 11 March 1847 Wallalong NSW Australia, married June 26, 1872 Queenland, Australia to Margaret McNevin. He died 16 May 1907 in Queensland.  - Rev James Stewart started the Brisbane City Mission for homeless people in Brisbane.

Children:
Archibald B. born April 13, 1873 in Brisbane, Australia.
Ethel Jane born March 30, 1875 in Brisbane Australia.
Grace Lillian born March 30, 1877 in Brisbane, Australia
Jeanette Isabel born January 31, 1880 in Brisbane, Australia.
James Crichton who died July 22, 1882 in Brisbane, Australia.
Margaret Stewart's sister, Jane or Jean, married James Crighton (Crichton), and lived at Lochside in Kinclaven Parish. They were the only family listed at Lochside, indicating that it is an estate, not a village. Dawn Gardiner

An interesting sidelight is the French spelling of James Chrichton's daughter's name, Jeannette Stuart Crichton, probably named after her grandmother, Jean Stewart Crichton (see William Stewart History).

Article written by Rev James Stewart:

The Maitland Weekly Mercury (NSW : 1894 - 1931) Saturday 1 April 1905 page 9

But in the November of 1890 my mother died in her 73rd year, and in the September following Janet Gray “passed,” not so sick or sore, as tired, in her 86th year, just a year younger thank her sister Aunt Crichton, who died in her native land and whose bonny helpmate, James Crichton, died where he had lived all his life, in Madderty parish, Perthshire, in his 99th year, the day after his dear old Minister died, with whom he had been associated as member and ruling elder for 60 years or more, and by whose graveside he was buried by a great company of relatives, the Minister being only one year younger than the elder to whom he was so warmly attached.

History of the Congregations of the United Presbyterian Church, 1733 - 1900 M Robert Small

Fourth Minister— -David Young, from Perth (Wilson Church). While a probationer Mr Young was located for some time in Liverpool, if haply he might revive Russell Street congregation, which was on the verge of extinction. The people called him in March 1840 ; but at that very time he was supplying at Kinclaven, where a far more inviting field opened, and there he was ordained, 12th August 1840. "The day being fine," says the magazine, "the whole service was conducted in the open air, a tent having been erected for the purpose in the immediate neighbourhood of the church." The stipend arranged for was ,£100, with manse, garden, a large glebe, and some other perquisites. On 13th September 1864 Mr Young, to the surprise and regret of the Presbytery, tendered the resignation of his charge, assigning as his reason a change of view on the subject of baptism. Mr Marshall of Coupar-Angus, a close friend of his, had heard that Mr Young was interesting himself in that question, but he never supposed it would come to this. A long conference having ended as it began, Mr Young's connection with Kinclaven was dissolved on 4th October, the Presbytery recording " their regret at thus losing a brother who has for twenty-four years laboured with much zeal and acceptance in the service of the Church." After this Mr Young resided in Glasgow, where he ministered to several Baptist churches in succession. He removed in 1867 to Blairgowrie, where his worth would be better understood, but in 1870 he had to desist from preaching owing to a severe affection of the throat. On retiring he received a presentation of over ,£200 from the inhabitants of the town. He died in Glasgow, 6th August 1885, in the eighty-first year of his age, and was buried in New Cathcart Cemetery.

Fifth Minister. — John Brown, from Douglas. Ordained, 3rd October 1865. He had Buckie in his choice, but preferred Kinclaven. The congregation had kept well up hitherto, as appears from the fact that 221 members signed Mr Brown's call. In the parish the Secession had always continued strong, and so late as 1843 it could claim 96 families, while 86 belonged to the Establishment. But between 185 1 and 1891 the population declined from over 900 to little more than 500. It was fitted to suggest whether the congregation ought not to have removed to Stanley at the time sermon was applied for. That town was well churched now, and most United Presbyterians settling down there, instead of undertaking the walk of two miles, were certain to drop into nearer churches. Steady decline set in, and the "Kirk o' the Muir," well filled as I remember it in 1852, has yielded to the inevitable. The membership at the close of 1899 was 122, and the stipend from the people £1 10.

Clunie is a small settlement in Perthshire, Scotland, 7 km west of Blairgowrie. It lies on the western shore of the Loch of Clunie. Near the village are the foundations of what is believed to have been be a castle used by Kenneth MacAlpin, the first king of Scotland, as a base for hunting in the nearby royal forest of Clunie. On a small island (formerly a crannog) in the loch stand the remains of Clunie Castle, a tower house of the Bishops of Dunkeld. The last pre-Reformation bishop, Robert Crichton, passed the property to his near relative, Robert Crichton, Lord Advocate of Scotland. His son James, the notable Scottish polymath better known as the Admirable Crichton, spent his childhood there. Within the grounds of the parish church, rebuilt in 1840, stands a mausoleum with a romanesque doorway thought to be from an earlier 12th or 13th century church which stood on the same site. The church is now linked with those at Kinclaven and Caputh. Clunie Primary School is now closed but the local hall survives with regular functions taking place.
