UES Memorbilia 1925 - 2013

The following items were made in the 1940's and 1950's by UES students. Children made the vehicles as part of their study of the community. As they were constructing each item they needed math and reading skills. For instance students learned about measurement in order to make boats, cars, trucks and trains.

If they were studying trains that would be the focus of their construction time.  Construction took place in patios adjoining the classroom. Tools and wood was kept in the outside cabinets. 

Once the vehicles were made students put them into a city where they would "play." A certain amount of time went into play each day. Students acted as train conductors, engineers, postal workers, ship captains etc. Problems were solved regarding the community both interpersonal and civic.
