Maurine Winsor (Farnsworth) (Thompson) 1924 - 2012

Obituary for Mrs. Maurine Farnsworth Thompson

Maurine Winsor Farnsworth Thompson passed away August 22, 2012 at The Charleston Assisted Living Center in Cedar Hills, UT, at the age of 88. She was born April 8, 1924, in Enterprise, Utah, to Eleanor Hulet and Murkins Terry Winsor. She grew up in Panaca, Nevada, graduating from Lincoln County High School in 1941. She married Raymond B. Farnsworth on December 31, 1943, in San Diego, California, where Ray was stationed in the Navy. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on August 14, 1944, prior to Ray’s departure to Adak, Alaska, during World War II. Upon Ray’s return, they settled in Provo, Utah, where they reared their four children.

Ray was a professor of agronomy at BYU and Maurine supported him in all his professional assignments which took them to Corvallis, Oregon; Tehran, Iran; Washington, D.C., and Taos, New Mexico. Maurine found her greatest fulfillment in being a homemaker and in giving service to others, especially in Family History. She also enjoyed her friends in BYU Women, DUP, Thursday Club, Odd Quads, and Iran Group. She was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully in all auxiliaries of the Church on both the ward and stake levels. She was one of the first Cub Scout den mothers in the Church and the first Primary president in Iran. She supported Raymond when he served as bishop of the Provo 8th Ward. After her husband’s retirement from BYU, they served as ordinance workers in the Provo Temple and as missionaries to the Hyde Park Family History Center in London.

Ray passed away Oct. 31, 1987, and Maurine later married Richard A. “Dick” Thompson on March 9, 1991. She and Dick spent most of their married years in St. George before Dick passed away on Oct. 24, 2011. Maurine then moved to The Charleston Assisted Living Facility in Cedar Hills, UT, where she has received loving care and enjoyed new friendships. She is survived by her four children: Dennis (Relva), Diane (Steven) Taylor, Kevin (Wendy), and Karalie (Scott) Clark. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandson; four brothers, Melvin (Thelma) Winsor, Myron (Doris) Adair, Gary (Beverly) Adair, Neldon Adair, and one sister, Lyle Jakeman. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews who loved “Aunt Maurine.” She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, her older sister, Delsa, and her brother Galen Winsor.
The family wishes to thank the caring staff at The Charleston and at Envision Home Health and Hospice for the loving care given to Maurine over the past ten months.
