Ochsen Restaurant, Kempten, AG

There was another Cantonal Tavern in Kempten near Ettenhausn which was owned by my great ... grandparents Mathias & Anna Bertschinger. It has been known since about 1500 and is still today called Ochsen.

It is a the cross road from the old Roman street going through Ettenhausen to Winterthur and Bäretswil going to the railroad station of Wetzikon (passing near the church). Interestingly there was a blue tramway from the Ochsen (terminal) to station Wetzikon going on this street.

It was nick named Büntzli Trucke (see picture card), the Bünzli Box, because the manager and driver was called Bünzli. We are just about to write an genealogical article on the Bünzli families of the Zürcher Oberland. Bünzli means both Swiss hill billy, sticking very much to the rules ...
I have tons of relations with the Bünzlis of Uster, Maur etc. Maybe I have som Bünzli blood ...

As said before Kempten is only about 10 - 15 minutes by foot from Ettenhausen, not so far as the church Wetzikon. Therefore the Jentas probably visited more the Ochsen than the Leuen.

My grand father Emil Miggel used to say in typical Zürcher Oberland dialect when asked where hes is from: Ts'Ettehuse hine iä, s'Chämpte über de Mischtstock iä ...

In Ettenhausen behind (back door) into, you have to go in Kempten over the menure heap ...

The Ochsen is still going strong as a restaurant, whether they serve ox tail (soup) as implied by their advertising we have to figure  out when we visit them together ...
see my friends Irina Toblers picture gallery Wetzipedia here:

Actually Andy Sidler and his partner live just behind the Ochsen and I am sure they will join us on our Ochsentour.

By the way eine Taverne was a kind of a hotel (motel) needing a cantonal licence. They were allowed to serve wine.
There were also stable for the horses of guests and they had a big Saal (reunion room) for all kind of events.
Therefore my grand ... parents bought in 1689 a kind of money printing license and got rich managing the Ochsen. They retired in 1710 and our whole clan moved over Shit heap to Ettenhausen and started farming ...

We understand that the Taverne was already there in medieval times, maybe even the Roman legions stopped there to have a Cerveza (beer) or a Vinum (wine) ...

I just read that name Kempten is celtic (meaning a kind of a fortress), you remember the Helvetians were here before the Romans conquered our lands and cultivated wine. So the Helvetians probably drank beer at our Ox taverne and ate wild pigs (boars) like Asterix and Obelix ...
