Christine Scholl 1812 - 1893

Christine Scholl FS ID: KH87-SZJ was born 7 Nov 1812 in Graben Germany. Her parents were Philipp Scholl 1785-1858 and Christina Krauss 1788 - 1830. She married Christoph Zimmermann 11 March 1845. In 1835, when Christine was 23 years old she had a child out of wedlock. See Family Book below for an explanation. Christine bore 2 children from 1847 to 1848 as seen below. Christine died 24 Dec 1893 and was most likely buried next to the church in the center of Graben. Given Christina's birth date of 7 Nov 1812, her age at death is incorrect in this record and should be: 80 years, 9 months, 22 days.

What happened to Christine's children?
1. Lydia Zimmermann 29 Nov 1847 to 24 Dec 1938 married Jacob Süss 1851. They married 28 Nov in Graben
2. Christian Zimmermann 18 March 1848 - deceased/married Maria Catherina Huettner. They had 2 children

No. 7. 1845 on the 11th of March, with official permission "d. d." Karlsruhe on the 20th of February 1845, no. 3328, were legitimately married here Christoph Zimmermann, widowed local citizen, with Christine Scholl, legitimate daughter of the local citizen Philipp Scholl and Christine Krauß. Witnesses: (1) Wilhelm Metzger; (2) Michel Wentz; both from here.
Graben, on the 11th of March 1845. [Pastor's signature]
My comment: The "official permission" presumably refers to something akin to a marriage license which was obtained on 20 Feb 1845 and numbered "3328" from the jurisdiction of Karlsruhe. I'm not sure about the abbreviation "d. d." but it occurs in all three records on this page. Ernest Thode, German-English Genealogical Dictionary, defines "d. d." as Latin for "de dato" = on this date.

Philipp Scholl 1785-1858  Family Book, film 102118620 page 1013
Translation of Familienbuch by Robert Seal:
(1) After "Philippe Scholl": bin Maurer = is a mason.
(2) Child number 1 of this couple is Christine,
Note that Christine has a parenthetical (NB) after her name. This is a footnote marker telling the reader to see the same footnote marker at the bottom of the page.
At the bottom of the page it says: NB. Christine hatte unehelich: Christine = Christine had an illegitimate [child]: Christine.
The child, Christine, was born 10 Feb 1835, and died 22 Feb 1835
Additional note from Ulrich Neitzel:I read the writing after the name of Scholl, Philipp as "B. u. Maurer", "B." being the common abbreviation for "Bürger" = citizen. So I would interpret it as "citizen and mason".

Comment: "Krautschneider" = cabbage cutter.
Notes: Robert Seal:Yes, this is the first time I've come across "Krautschneider".
See the following link about the occupation "Krautschneider": https://www.geschichtewiki.wien.gv.at/Krautschneider

Something to think about: Krautschneider is a seasonal job; given Christoph Zimmermann's age at death of 66 years, maybe this was something he did part-time in retirement.

Herb Cutter: In autumn, when the cabbage heads were brought into the houses to be stored, the cabbage cutters (also: cabbage slicers) began their work, cutting the cabbage into the standing barrels provided and adding the necessary ingredients to make the sauerkraut out of it. The cutting was done with six-knife planes. This seasonal work was usually carried out by external workers (especially from the Montafon), with the men usually dividing up a larger area among themselves so as not to compete with each other. The cabbage cutters wore a wide coat and a wide-brimmed felt hat, and carried their tools in a leather bag or knapsack that they carried with a shoulder strap.
